Edo culture story Hidden Downtown Culture at the Base of Tokyo Skytree

Sumida Ward in Tokyo has been developing since the early Edo period and evolved into an industrial area in modern times.

At the base of Tokyo Skytree, you'll find numerous events and landmarks from the Edo period, such as the Sumida River Fireworks Festival and Ryogoku Sumo Arena, all showcasing the charm of downtown culture.

This event will take place at Tokyo Skytree, bridging modern and Edo-period Japanese culture and offering a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

Culture story.01 The historic Mukojima Geisha District,
continuing since the Meiji Era

Across the Sumida River from Asakusa, you'll find the Mukojima Geisha District, where traditional geisha continue to practice their art. Known for its cherry blossoms and flower-viewing spots, Mukojima has maintained Tokyo's historic charm as a traditional geisha district since the Meiji Era. Today, you can still enjoy seasonal performances by geisha in kimono, including traditional Japanese dance and games at tea houses. With its tranquil downtown atmosphere, the Mukojima Geisha District remains a valuable place for preserving Japan’s cultural heritage.

Culture story.02 Japan’s national sport:
The sumo culture of Ryogoku

Ryogoku is known as the heart of Japan's national sport, sumo. This area, where sumo has been held since the Edo period, remains a sacred site for sumo wrestling, with major tournaments taking place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena in Tokyo. The Kokugikan also houses a sumo museum where visitors can learn about the history and culture of sumo. Additionally, many sumo stables are located in the area, and some offer opportunities to observe morning practice sessions. Ryogoku has developed alongside sumo culture and continues to be cherished by both domestic and international visitors for preserving this tradition.

Culture story.03 A town of artisans that sustained Edo

Tokyo's Sumida Ward, known for its glass factories since ancient times, is characterized by the sound of Edo Kiriko artisans skillfully cutting glass, evoking the traditional atmosphere of old Edo. The Japanese have a keen sense of manipulating light and shadow, softening natural light with elements like eaves and shoji screens. This acute sensitivity is embodied in Edo Kiriko, where deep grooves refract light, thin lines create reflective effects, and sometimes the glass is frosted to achieve a softer effect. This craftsmanship is a testament to Japanese skill and artistry.
