July 14th, 2008
Tobu Railway (Head office: Sumida-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshizumi Nezu) and Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co., Ltd. (Head office: Sumida-ku, Tokyo; President: Kinya Miyasugi) are moving forward with a development project known as the "Rising East Project," scheduled for opening in the spring of 2012. The multi-purpose development centers on a new tower about 610 meters high in the Narihirabashi/Oshiage area of Tokyo's Sumida Ward. In June, the new tower was named "Tokyo Sky Tree" by a nationwide poll. On Monday July 14, the prayer for safety and groundbreaking celebration was held, and construction work got underway.
Based on the current schedule, the tower's steel framework will reach a height of approximately 200 meters by August 2009. The framework will be constructed up to the second observatory at a height of 450 meters by around November 2010, and then work on the antenna section will be undertaken. The goal is for construction to be completed by December 2011.
